 ASSISTED
LIVING
The Assisted Living Federation of America defines an Assisted Living residence
as a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health
care designed to meet the needs -- both scheduled and unscheduled -- of those
who need help with activities of daily living (ALFA).
There are three types of Assisted Living facilities:
Type A
- Resident must be physically and mentally capable
of evacuating the residence unassisted. This may include the
mobile, non-ambulatory person, such as those who are in wheelchairs
or electric carts and have the capacity to transfer themselves
in an emergency.
- Does not require routine attendance during nighttime
sleeping hours.
- Must be capable of following directions under
emergency conditions.
Type B
- May require staff assistance to evacuate.
- May be incapable of following directions under
emergency conditions.
- May require attendance during nighttime sleeping
hours.
- May not be permanently bedfast but may require
assistance in transferring to and from wheelchair.
Type C
- A four-bed facility which meets the minimum
standards and program rules for enrollment with the Texas Department
of Human Services as an adult foster care facility and is so
enrolled on the effective date of this rule will be deemed licensed
as a Type C facility without having to apply for an assisted
living facility license.
